Guide & Tips for hiring a car in Cyprus | Penguin Car Hire

Q: How old do I need to be to hire a car in Cyprus?

A: You must be at least 21 years old and you will often need to have held your licence for a minimum of three years.

Q: What licence do I need?

A: Drivers from some countries will require an International Driving Permit in addition to their driving licence. Check the relevant government website before your trip.

Q: What is required to secure my booking?

A: Most rental companies will need your passport and a credit card to secure your booking.

Q: What kind of car will I be hiring?

A: The country drives on the left so most rental cars will be right-hand drive and manual. Book well in advance if you require something different.

Q: Can I drive wherever I want within Cyprus?

A: No; Cyprus is divided by the Green Line that separates the southern and northern sides of the island. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise the self-declared ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ in the north and the majority of car hire companies in the south will not insure travel across the border. However, car insurance for travel in the north can be purchased at the four border crossings. Hire car companies in the north will often collect travellers from the airports at Paphos and Larnaca and drive you across the border to your rental car.

Q: Why has my hire car got red number plates?

A: Hire cars in Cyprus are easily identified by their red number plates – good news for travellers, who often find locals more patient with them as a result.

Q: Do I have to drop the car back where I collected it?

A: It’s usually possible to book a one-way hire within Cyprus, meaning you can collect your car in one location and drop it off in another. You may pay a supplement for this.

Q: Do I need to bring a child seat with me?

A: Children under 14 must travel in an appropriate child seat. These can be hired when booking a car.
